Buying Wine Online

Purchasing anything via the internet has always been met with skepticism by many people.  Mention handing out a credit card number to people and they cringe.  Daily, millions of dollars are being passed around without a worry in the world because of the improvement in security over the years.

Online wine sales have always been, and will continue to be treated with “raised eyebrows” by some within the industry.  These days, more and more quality online stores are presenting quality wines at affordable prices.

Subscribing to a couple of mailing lists is a good way of being sent regular updates as to what is happening in the industry as well as the myriad of specials out there.  The more sites you sign up to, the more information you will receive with a wider range of choice.

Online wine sites are many and varied.  It can take a while to wade through the many different sites to find exactly what you’re wanting.  The best way to go about this is to start by looking for your favourite wines, then your favourite wineries, then your favourite regions.  You can even search for a combination of wineries and type of wine, or regions and type of wine.  You’re bound to find what you’re looking for.

Wine sales websites are varied from site to site, but fall into certain categories which include:
1. Wine direct from the winery from their own website.
2. Wine direct from the winery via an affiliate website that takes commission from the winery for the sale.
3. Companies that buy the wine from the winery, then on sell it via their website.
4. Auction houses which sell off stock no longer required from the winery or garnered through special deals.

Wine auctions should be looked at with an open mind though.  The problem with buying older style wines from auction houses is knowing how the wine has been stored over time.

The best places to get wine online are through companies that stock a variety of wine which is of the newest vintage as you really can’t go wrong.  Most of the sites have a guarantee on quality so there should never be a problem.

Online wine sales shouldn’t be a troublesome experience.  It should really extend the experience you’ve already physically had at a vineyard, or allow you to pick up a bargain that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to get.

This is just a short guide to help ease the worries of some people about buying things online, especially wine.  More and more quality wine sites are popping up all the time, so why not give it a try from the comforts of home?

Have You Ever Wanted A Wine Room?

Wine is produced and enjoyed in hundreds of countries all over the world. It is even more popular today than it has ever been before and lots of people are taking the step of collecting a few bottles themselves and even buying some of the gadgets and luxuries that make drinking wine all the more fun. There has also been an increase in the number of people taking the step to create their very own wine room where they can store and enjoy their wines. It may be a big step for some people but here are 3 top tips for getting your own wine room

1.)
Keep it cool. Your wines should not really be stored outside of the 10° C to 16° C range. It is not the end of the world going lower than this suggested range but if you store above 26° C for any great length of time you will pretty much ruin the wine. With this mind you should either be able to regulate temperature in the room or invest in a wine cooler. Additionally you will need to keep the moisture levels down so a dehumidifier could be another worthwhile purchase.

2.) Glassware and tableware. Most people still use their kitchen to store their wine drinking utensils, despite having a room completely dedicated to their wine. If you ever want to sample some of your wine, which you will, there will be no need to keep visiting the kitchen if you have what you need right there.

3.) Organise. It’s such as simple thing to get right, and yet most don’t tend to worry about it until they get into a mess. If you arrange the wines by type, region and date from the very start, you will soon be in a mess and you’ll waste lots of time trying to find the bottle you want. You might want to invest in a nice wooden wine cabinet as well to display your wines in all their glory

After reading the very first chapter you will discover that Scott is well versed in the area of making home made wine.  This is a very well written, well organized and well thought out book where each chapter is divided into “lessons.”

Lessons one, two and three, located in the first section, contain vital information on products, materials, and ingredients needed for producing the wine.  It includes sound advice on such topics as:

•    Where to prepare, ferment and store your wine.
•    Gathering the needed equipment.
•    Setting aside time for this project.
•    Sanitizing your equipment.
•    Comfortable preparation area.
•    Counter space for equipment.
•    Following directions precisely.
•    Keeping a clean work area
•    Two points in achieving the perfect batch of wine.

Scott reviews several types of wine making products in lesson three, given you his recommendation and suggestions.

There are fifteen lessons in all, each one just as informative and important as the previous. The last chapter contains lessons 11 – 15 which supply additional tips on upgrading and improving recipes and techniques.

The appendix contains thoughts and ideas for hosting a wine tasting.  You are given tips for evaluating and ranking wines.

I am excited to have this book available at my fingertips as a reference guide for product tips, for recipe ideas and for trouble shooting when I run into problems.  Using this book practically guarantees making a great bottle of home made wine a success.

There are a couple of other great wine making books currently available that I would like to also mention the guide The Ultimate Fruit Wine Maker’s Guide and “Making Great Wine” are two that are recommended reading as wine making reference manuals.

Getting Wine Stains Out of Fabric

Spilling wine on your clothing or on a carpet is one of those horror moments. First there is a pause whilst everyone puts down their wine glasses, takes in what has happened, and then the suggestions start. Everyone has an opinion on the best action to take, and it’s hard to know which is right. Here we take a look at the best action to take if and when you spill different types of wine

Red wine. If you don’t approach the stain in the right way, red wine can be a permanent addition to any fabric. Some people say that wine wine is the best thing to put on a red stain, but this is not really true. What works a whole lot better is pouring over the stain a mix of talcum powder and a little ammonia. After around 60-120 minutes the wine should have completely been absorbed by the talc and you can just suck it up with a hoover. Alternatively you could mop up as much wine as you can with a paper towel then pour on white wine vinegar. You need to leave the vinegar on the stain for a good hour to get the most from it

White wine stains. The colouring in wine called tanning is not as present in white wine as it is in red, meaning stains are not nearly so bad. To lift it off cloths or carpet just soak in warm water with a bit of washing detergent in, and then mop it up with a cloth. You can then use the talcum powder technique afterwards to get rid of any wine smell.

Champagne. This is whole different ball game altogether as you shouldn’t necessarily rush to clean up a champagne spill. This is because the bubbles in champagne are known to actually break up dirt particles and lift them out of the fabric. Putting glass vases or crystal vases over the spill will keep it from drying out and the cleaning effect will go on for longer.

How Does Wine Make it to Your Doorstep?

Plenty of people have ordered wine over the internet in the past, whether its through online stores or wine auction houses. But have you ever given thought as to what happens after you purchase your wine?

Everything moves into gear as soon as your order and payment are received by the company.

When your order is printed out, it is then submitted for the checking process. This process involves checking whether the wine is in stock and has been approved for commercial distribution.

Once the check is complete, the order will then be given to warehouse staff to find your wines and assemble your order. These are then carefully packed into specially designed delivery packs, minimising movement, allowing for maximum freshness and preventing breakage.

The order is then put into the delivery network, where a number of delivery partners pick up all the packages to be delivered to their designated areas. This usually occurs within hours, but can be longer depending of the amount of orders and if there is a backlog or the wine is out of stock.

The first part of transportation is always done by road, and if in the same country, will mostly be done by road.  If its an international order, your order will go to either the airport or shipping port. A lot of the time which one it goes to will be determined by the amount of shipping paid on the order.

This step can be the longest part of the journey. Orders that arrive at the airport can take a while to be processed. As air transportation is the fastest option, most people send deliveries via airplane. Being a popular choice, this has resulted in a backlog of cargo at the airport which will usually add a few days to transportation.

If it goes via seaport, it will make it onto the boat in good time as boats have a large cargo capacity, however the trip itself takes a couple of weeks to complete.

Once in your country, it will then head to a warehouse for processing. Sorting takes typically one to two days and is then loaded into trucks and vans for delivery.
