Anyone passionate about wine usually starts to collect it and as their wine collection grows they must begin looking for a place to store a wine collection.

A closet or cupboard can easily be turned into a mini wine cellar to store your growing wine collection.

Before you begin building your mini wine closet consider the position of the closet in relation to the rest of the house or apartment.

If possible, avoid converting a closet against an outside wall into a wine cellar. The outside walls of your abode can be subject to wide fluctuations in temperature from season to season. Ideally, choose an internal closet where your wine will be able to be stored at a more constant temperature.

The speed and degree of any temperature changes are critical in successfully storing and aging wine. A gradual change of a few degrees between summer and winter won’t matter. A similar change each day will certainly cause harm to your wines by ageing them too quickly.

The major rule when you are storing your wine is to avoid wide fluctuations in temperature. Damage of this type will be evident immediately from the stickiness that often forms around the capsule. Over time, the continued expansion then contraction of the wine will damage the integrity of the cork. It’s just like having the cork pulled and replaced every day. When this happens, very small quantities of wine may be pushed out along the edge of the cork allowing air to seep back in. Once air has come in contact with the wine the irreversible process of oxidation starts and your wine will be ruined.

At 55º to 58ºF the wine will age gracefully, enabling it to fully develop as the winemaker intended. Higher temperatures age wine more rapidly and cooler temperatures slow the ageing process. The damage done to your wine will be irreversible if it is stored at a temperature above 82ºF for even a month.

Maybe the hardest part of building a wine cellar closet is finding other locations to store what is already in the closet!! Do not hesitate now … remove all the present contents (give away / auction / move them) and begin with an empty closet!

Purchase inexpensive wine racks from an online retailer, hardware store or storage shop and you’ll have a simple but effective mini wine cellar.

Wine rack designs vary greatly in bottle density; price variations have more to do with the aesthetic appeal of the racks than their efficiency.

Individual racks makes it easy to select bottles. If you place racks against only one wall of the closet you should still have space available on the floor or shelves to store wines purchased by the case … these wines should remain strored in their cartons.

Now Is The Best Time To Invest In Fine Wine

The wine market is a funny thing. It is essentially a luxury product and yet millions of bottles are produced each year.  A wine might be worth than one 10 years older than it and the price can come down how one person thinks it taste. One thing is certain though, there is a lot of money to be made from wine and now is a better time than ever to invest.

Fine wine prices have been rocketing upwards for many years now. As better storage facilities and more advanced manufacturing methods produce higher quality wines, so too does the price people are willing to pay for them go up.Sotherby’s Jame Richie who works as the top wine professional there actually said “Prices had risen to nearly unsustainable levels last spring”.Having said this, now that we find ourselves in a very weak economy, these fine wine prices are starting to come down to realistic levels. 2009’s January figures showed a decrease in prices of close to 1.2% according to the index that tracks 100 of the top collectable wines, known as Liv-Ex 100.  This is trend that experts expect to continue for while and can in fact be seen throughout the wine sector, from wine production to the sales of everyday shot glasses.

A bottle of 1978 Montrachet Domaine Romanee-Conti recently sold at auction in Chicago for just under $4,000. The price of $23,929 was only a few years back at Sotherby’s for the same bottle of wine. This sharp decline means that if you’ve ever wanted to start your own wine collection, either for your own consumption or as an investment, it will soon be the right time.The lowest point in that the market will face is predicted to be somewhere towards the end of the year. It should then be able to start gaining some speed again. Tableware and drinking accessories are expected to improve as well.

Joss Fowler, a wine investment expert from Berry Bros & Rudd has some tips for getting the best return. A Red Bordeaux is a pretty sound bet according to him, mainly because it very rarely ages badly. On top of this, make sure you go for the top wines you can get for your money and always get the best vintage. Stick to this adage and you’ll be filling up your wine racks before too long.

The only way that you will be able to get a bitter taste from your hops is if you boil them. Usually, it takes between 60 and 90 minutes to fully boil hops. The higher the level of acid, the more bitter your beer will be. These bitter hops do not, however, produce the distinct flavor and aroma that each beer offers. Those attributes are found in a different type of hop, called a finishing hop. A finishing hop can be adjusted as you add it to the mix, thus changing the amount of flavor and aroma.

If you stay on top of the boiling process, you will afford yourself the opportunity to modify the aroma, flavor, and bitterness of the hops as it is eventually ultimately tasted in your beer. To get the best flavor from your hops, add them to your boil about ten minutes before the boil ends. If you are going to add an aroma hop, the best time to do it is usually five minutes before the boil ends. You can also achieve more aroma and flavor by adding your hops to your fermenting device. This is called dry hopping, and will allow you to add the flavor and aroma without the bitterness.
